In Regional Anaesthesia, pain from part of the body is prevented by placing local anaesthetic drugs on nerves supplying that part of the body.

In the process, the muscles in the area are also affected, and that region of the body becomes immobile and numb.

Common forms of regional anaesthesia are "epidurals", "spinals" and "blocks".

During Regional anaesthesia, the patient remains conscious.

If you are concerned about this, the anaesthetist can give you a sedation (drugs to help you relax).
