Preparing for Anaesthesia. There
are several things you can do to ensure the risks of Anaesthesia are
minimized. ·
Stop smoking before your operation for as long as possible ·
If you are over weight, losing
weight decreases the risk of heart and lung problems ·
Exercising daily improves your hearts ability to cope with stressful situations e.g.
major surgery ·
Bring to hospital your regular
medications and the results of recent tests ·
do not eat and drink anything
before your operation for at least 6 hours
before Surgery. Younger children 4 hours may be sufficient. ·
Note that food or liquids may
be brought up (regurgitated) at the time of anaesthesia and cause serious
problems with breathing. ·
If you are having a day-only
procedure arrange to have an adult to escort you home afterwards and to
remain with you for the night. ·
You should not drive a car
drink alcohol operate heavy machinery make important decisions (signing
wills or cheques) for at least 24hrs after an anaesthetic. ·
Once back at home if you are
concerned you should contact the hospital or your doctor.
